Harmonizing Inclusivity: Celebrating Deaf Awareness and the Universal Power of Music

Deaf Awareness Week is an annual event that promotes the positive aspects of deafness and social inclusion and raises awareness of the huge range of local organizations supporting deaf people and their families and friends. It also celebrates exceptional individuals and showcases what we can do to champion inclusivity and be more deaf-friendly.

The theme for Deaf awareness week 2022 is Deaf Inclusion, to explore the entire theme of inclusion within our community. Emphasising the importance of mental health, and empathising with underrepresented groups amongst the Deaf such as migrants, BMIs, and women, as well as raising pertinent issues of deafness being overlooked in education, health settings, and the workplace.

According to WHO, over 5% of the world's population – or 430 million people – require rehabilitation to address their 'disabling' hearing loss (432 million adults and 34 million children). It is estimated that by 2050 over 700 million people – or one in every ten...

Music Bridges the Intergenerational Divide

To celebrate Global Intergenerational Week starting on April 25, we are highlighting the positive effects of intergenerational music-making and its ability to promote inclusive play and bring benefits to both the very young and older adults.

The week's goal is to inspire individuals, groups, organizations, and local/national government to fully embrace intergenerational practice, connecting people of all ages, especially the younger and older generations, helping us reconnect, combat loneliness, and break down age barriers.

With a different focus every day of the week, each provides opportunities to share ideas and give inspiration. For example, and probably most poignant to Percussion Play, Wednesday, April 27, invites us to ‘Celebrate intergenerational spaces’ and join the growing movement in creating intergenerational spaces within our communities for work, rest, or play. Music "speaks" to all of us, regardless of age, language, or mobility. Outdoor musical instruments in...

Autism Acceptance Month - April 2022

Kicking off with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, Autism Acceptance Month is an ongoing international effort to promote autism awareness and acceptance to ensure that all affected by autism can achieve the highest quality of life possible.

Designed to build a better awareness of the signs, symptoms, and realities of autism, Autism Acceptance Month focuses on providing information and resources for communities to be more aware of autism, promote acceptance and be more inclusive in everyday life.

With the prevalence of autism in the USA rising (from 1 in 125 children in 2010 to 1 in 54 in 2020), it is more important than ever that communities are encouraged to celebrate their differences and become more inclusive of individuals with autism. Music in the great outdoors promotes spontaneous, inclusive play opportunities for expression, fun, and laughter, helping support individuals with ASD and their families by strengthening the bonds of communication between parents, grandparents,...

Wellbeing Through Music - World Music Therapy Day March 1st

On World Music Therapy Day, March 1, we highlight how music and music therapy have the power to heal, improve mental health and wellbeing and enrich lives.

Music has long been used to help heal, transcending nations and cultures; this is why music is often referred to as the universal language. Music therapy benefits cognitive, emotional, and social issues and the physical needs of people. It has proven to be an effective way to help alleviate symptoms and provide a sense of inner calm to patients. For this reason, music therapy is becoming an increasingly popular form of holistic 'healing' and is used in hospices, care homes, residential homes, schools, and rehabilitation centers worldwide.

Treatment using music can help those experiencing loneliness, mental ill-health, and degenerative conditions such as dementia by enabling them to 'reconnect' with the world around them and encouraging them to communicate with others in a non-verbal way. Playing musical instruments and engaging...

Growing Together - Children's Mental Health Week 7-13 February 2022

Children's Mental Health Week takes place on 7-13 February. This year's theme is Growing Together, with children (and adults) asked to consider how they have grown, what they need to help them grow, and how they can help others to grow too.

There are four identifiable areas of human growth; physical, intellectual, emotional, and social, each overlapping the other. Human growth is a lifelong process; however, the fastest period of growth and development is during the infancy and early childhood life stages. We've all heard the theory that playing music to plants helps them grow, is it the same for children? What we do know is that musical experiences can most definitely build meaningful social, emotional, and cognitive brain connections that will help children hit developmental milestones as they grow.

Outdoor musical instruments can be unusual yet fun and functional tools to aid the development of physical skills and are proven to support communication, encourage expression...
